AMAA Sport League Competition Rules
PROOF OF AGE RULE: All competitors must have proof of age
available if verification is needed, ie. (birth certificate,
driver’s license, or other acceptable documents).
LEGAL AGE RULE: All competitors will compete at the
age they were as of January 1st of the current competition year. All
points earned by the competitor will stay in the division they were
earned in and may not be transferred. A competitor can always
compete at his/her chronological age. If the competitor turns 18
years of age they must compete as an adult. You may be granted
permission by the Commissioner to start the season as an adult
knowing you will have an age change some time in the season. The
legal age rule is designed for rating purposes.
UNIFORM : All competitors must wear a complete
traditional or professional sport karate uniform (Kung Fu, Tae Kwon
Do, etc.) in good condition. The competitor must wear the
appropriate color belt or sash during competition.
RANK RULE: Competitors must compete at the highest
belt rank they have achieved in the martial arts. Once a competitor
competes as a black belt legally, he/she must always compete at the
rank of black belt. A competitor can never compete in a lower rank
division then the rank that they have attained in the martial arts.
COMPETITOR RESPONSIBILITIES: It is the
responsibility of the competitor to know the rules and be ready for
competition when their ring and event is called. Three calls will be
made for competition at ringside. After the last call is made the
division will be closed after three minutes. The competitor if not
present may have a Representative to stand in for them till the time
they are called to compete. If the competitor is not ready at this
time they be disqualified from this event.
|
 |
LATE ENTRIES: Once a division has started (the
first competitor has started or the first match has begun) no new
competitors may be added to this division.
FORMS RULES:
ORDER OF COMPETITION: Once the final call has been
made, competitors will turn in their cards for competition. The
cards will then be thoroughly shuffled then drawn at random for
order of competition. The first three competitors will perform
before any scores will be given.
After the third competitor has
finished the first competitor will be called back up for scoring,
followed in order by the second and third competitor. This provides
the judges with a sampling of the competitors skill level. All
remaining competitors will be scored when they are through
performing. For divisions that may only have less then three
competitors the judges will score by a show of hands.
TIED SCORES: If at the end of competition there is
a tie for first, second or third place, the competitors will perform
the same form they tied with in reverse order. If after this there
is still a tie, then the tie will be broken by a show of hands.
WEAPONS: A competitor who drops his/her weapon or
if the weapon breaks during the performance of their form, that
competitor will be disqualified automatically. A competitor who
shows careless misuse of a weapon may be disqualified.
FORMS: Traditional forms must capture the essence
of classical martial arts movements, showing the traditional
techniques, kicks, strikes, blocks and stances.
Open forms divisions, allow contemporary martial arts movements and
techniques which have evolved over the past 25 years.
STARTING A FORM OVER: Under the rank of Black Belt,
a competitor who starts their form and has a lapse of memory or for
some other reason must restart, that competitor will be able to
perform the form again. The judges will score the form as if no
mistake was made.
JUDGES: For Black Belt divisions, there must be
five Back Belt judges present and scoring. The high and the low
score will be taken out and the remaining three scores will be added
together to create a fair playing field. All under Black Belt
judging may be done with three judges.
RING SIZE: All Black Belt rings must be 20' x 20'.
All under Black Belt adult and children rings may be no smaller then
17' x 17' with two start lines in the middle of the ring
approximately two feet apart.
BOW OUTS: If you choose to bow out rather then
compete, you will not place in the division in which you bowed out
of and will not receive points.
MUSICAL FORMS:
Once the competitor has bowed in,
they will have up to and no longer than three minutes to complete
their routine. Each competitor must provide their own music and is
responsible for their own sound system. Weapons are allowed in
musical forms.
GRAND CHAMPIONS: All the same rules for forms and weapons
still apply. Grand Champion is NOT a rated division and does not receive
extra rating points.
You must compete with the same form you won your respective division
with that day.
SELF DEFENSE RULES: TRADITIONAL
SELF DEFENSE
Once the competitor has bowed in, from that point in
time they have up to and no longer than
three minutes to complete their routine. They may use more
than one attacker and are able to use props. The competitor may
speak or may explain their techniques. No acting or skits.
SPARRING RULES:
REQUIRED SAFETY
EQUIPMENT: approved headgear; hand and foot pads, mouthpieces
and groin cups (for male competitors only) are mandatory for all
competitors in sparring divisions. The center referee will check all
competitors' equipment. If it is deemed unsafe, he/she will be asked to
change the equipment before they will be allowed to compete. Handpads: A
soft padded surface must cover the fingers, wrist and any striking
surface of the hand. Footpads: A soft padded surface must cover the
instep, sides, toes, ankle and back of the heel of the foot.
Headgear: The front, sides and back of the head must be covered by a
soft padded surface and must be firmly secured. Insufficiently padded
gloves, foot and headgear will not be allowed. Equipment must be in good
condition and free of heavy taping, tears or any other repairs that may
cause injury. All competitors must wear a properly fitted mouthpiece
during sparring. Shin pads are optional but highly recommended.
NUMBER OF JUDGES:
Five judges must
be used for all Black Belt divisions. Three judges may be used for all
adult and children's divisions under Black Belt.
REMOVAL OF A JUDGE: If a competitor
or coach feels that a Judge should be removed form their division for a
good reason, this must be done before the division begins. It is totally
up to the tournament director or the abtrater.
CENTER JUDGE: The Center Judge is
the head official and is thoroughly versed on the rules and order of
competition. The Center Judge promotes the safety of the competitors,
enforces the rules and ensures fair play. The Center Judge starts and
stops the match, awards points, makes penalty decisions, administrates
the voting of the other judges, communicates clearly with the
scorekeeper and timekeeper and announces the winner of each match.
• Match starts and ends only with his/her command (not the command of
the timekeeper).
• Has final decision on any disputes on score.
• Can overrule a majority call only to issue a warning or a penalty
point.
• Has the ability to issue warnings and award penalties.
• Can automatically disqualify a competitor who has received three
penalty points.
• Has the power to issue time - outs. A competitor can ask for a time -
out, but it is only the Center Judge who can issue one. The
disqualification of a competitor, where disqualification is not
automatic, is determined only by a majority vote of judges.
CORNER JUDGES:
Corner judges call
points as they see them. The Center Judge may confer with the corner
judges to determine penalties or warnings, although the Center Judge
alone has the power to issue them alone. The corner judges will be asked
to vote on disqualification rulings. It is a majority vote of all judges
that determines a scoring point.
CALLS THAT A JUDGE MAY MAKE: When
the Center Judge believes there has been a significant exchange of
techniques, or when signaled by a corner judge, (corner judges will
never call out the word point) the Center Judge will call out the word,
"BREAK!" in a load voice. The Center Judge then returns the competitors
to their starting marks and makes a call for scoring by calling out to
the corner judges, "JUDGES CALL". All judges and the Center Judge must
cast their votes simultaneously. At that time the Center Judge will
award points, issue warnings, call penalty points or make a
disqualification. I t takes a majority vote to award a point.
BLOOD RULE: If the judges see
contact made to a competitor by the other competitor, and they are
injured as a result of, and has flowing blood, then the offending
competitor will automatically be disqualified. Contact must be seen by
the judges.
STRIKING AFTER BREAK HAS BEEN CALLED:
We will not tolerate late techniques being thrown after the word
"Break" has been called. Note that if a competitor has begun to throw
his technique as "Break" is called, he/she will not be penalized. The
Center Judge will issue a warning to the offender and award a point to
the other competitor. The second violation of this rule will result in
disqualification.
TARGET AREAS: The headgear is a
target with the exception of the top of the head. The face mask area,
ribs, chest, abdomen (from the belt and up,) the seam of the uniform top
from the seam to the front of the body are all target areas.
Exception: No face contact allowed in youth divisions
under the rank of brown belt. The same applies for adult divisions.
Note: The face is a scoring target if a well focused technique is thrown
two inches from the face. This will be counted as a point.
* ILLEGAL TARGET AREAS: Spine, neck /
throat, groin, legs, knees and back.
* ILLEGAL TECHNIQUES: Sweeps, grabs hair
pulling, scratches, bites, head-butts, knees, elbows, eye poking, take
downs, ground fighting, any stomps grabbing for more then one second,
uncontrolled blind techniques, or any other dangerous technique that is
unsafe in sport karate.
LENGTH OF MATCH: Matches will run a
full two minutes regardless of the amount of points scored. At the end
of two minutes, the competitor with the most points will be declared the
winner. If there is a tie at the end of the match, the first point
scored next will decide the winner.
POINT VALUES: Legal hand techniques
that score will be awarded one (1) point. Legal kicking techniques to
the body that score will be awarded one (1) point. Legal kicking
techniques to the head will be awarded two (2) points.
AWARDING POINTS: Points are awarded
by a majority vote of all judges. The majority of judges do not have to
agree on the same technique being scored, only that a point was scored.
If the majority of judges are calling a two point technique, the two (2)
points will be awarded. Otherwise only one (1) point will be scored.
PENALTIES AND WARNINGS: A penalty
point will be awarded for each and every rules violation. If a
competitor receives three penalty points in any one match, he/she will
be disqualified. If the Center Judge deems the severity of the first
rules violation warrants disqualification, the competitor can then be
disqualified. Only two (2) face contacts will be tolerated. The first
face contact will result in a penalty point. The second face contact
will result in a disqualification. If the Center Judge deems the first
face contact is too severe, the offender will be disqualified.
OUT OF BOUNDS: A competitor who has
both feet out of bounds can not be scored on. A competitor with one foot
out of bounds can still be scored on and has the ability to score on
his/her opponent.
RUNNING OUT OF BOUNDS: Running out
of bounds to avoid fighting, or falling to the ground to avoid fighting,
will result in a warning. Continuing to do so after warned the first
time will result in penalty points, and may lead to disqualification.
COACHING: Coaching is something most
competitors do not have access to. Therefore, it could become an unfair
advantage for the competitor without a coach. So no coaching will be
allowed.
Note: Calling out a competitors name and cheering them on is not
coaching.
UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT: Unsportsmanlike behavior by the competitor, as well as his/her coaches,
friends or family will result in immediate disqualification. Note: Being
disqualified for unsportsmanlike conduct will result in being
disqualified for the next AMAA event as well. AMAA reserves the right to
deny entry for competitors, instructors or coach's who have demonstrated
this behavior in the past.
